Igho Tiny Ubiribo dies from pulmonary embolism after Thailand surgery

Nigerian-British businessman and social media influencer Igho "Tiny" Ubiribo died following complications from a cosmetic procedure in Thailand, according to findings from an inquest held at Inner West London Coroners' Court. Known online also as Ego, the 43-year-old was vacationing in Bangkok with his wife, fashion designer and socialite Danielle Simba Allen, when he underwent the operation.

Medical Emergency and Hospitalization in Bangkok

Ubiribo received 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine injected into his penis at an unnamed clinic in Bangkok. Shortly after leaving the clinic, the couple stayed at a Marriott hotel in Bangkok and went for a massage. During the massage, Ubiribo began complaining of chest pains and lost consciousness on two separate occasions.

Emergency responders rushed him by ambulance to Sukhumvit Hospital. According to medical reports, Ubiribo was initially conscious upon arrival at the facility, and his wife immediately informed the medical staff about the cosmetic procedure he had undergone.

Dr Thongchai Chansirirattingkul from Sukhumvit Hospital noted that the patient had experienced two cases of syncope earlier when he was having a massage. Doctors quickly diagnosed a pulmonary embolism, which occurs when a blood vessel in the lungs becomes blocked by a clot. Medical personnel recommended an immediate computed tomography scan to assess the condition, but Ubiribo lost consciousness definitively before the scan could take place.

Hospital staff transferred him to intensive care and administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation for more than 100 minutes in an effort to save his life. Despite these efforts, he died in the early hours of March 6.

Postmortem Findings and Coroner's Ruling

Following his death, a postmortem examination conducted in the United Kingdom provided evidence linking the cosmetic procedure to the fatality. Pathologists discovered cellular material directly inside Ubiribo's lungs that matched the hyaluronic acid used during the cosmetic treatment.

Coroner Jean Harkin officially ruled that the influencer died from a pulmonary embolism caused by the cosmetic procedure.

Clinics frequently market these interventions as quick enhancements, with treatments sometimes costing up to $9,000 and lasting six to nine months. Medical experts emphasize that the long-term safety and efficacy of these procedures remain largely unproven.

Potential complications extend to severe infections, tissue necrosis, granulomas, and life-threatening pulmonary embolisms. Doctors continue to urge individuals to consult qualified medical practitioners before pursuing such surgeries.

Before his passing, Ubiribo was widely recognized for showcasing an opulent lifestyle to his substantial social media following, which spanned over 100,000 followers on Instagram. His asset portfolio included a property in Los Angeles' Crenshaw area valued at $1.1 million alongside a flat in London valued at $600,000. The couple had married in a ceremony held in Zimbabwe.

Ubiribo was laid to rest in London in a gold casket reportedly valued at more than $745,000. A gathering of family, friends, and prominent public figures attended the service, including Nigerian Afrobeats artist Davido, celebrity barman Cubana Chief Priest, and Pastor Tobi Adegboyega.
