Prince William, the Prince of Wales, recently made a surprise appearance on the "New Heights" podcast, hosted by Travis and Jason Kelce. The podcast, which aired on July 3, featured Prince William discussing his passion for football, the upcoming FIFA World Cup, and his expectations for the English national team.
Prince William, who serves as the Patron of the Football Association (FA), shared his thoughts on the team's chances in the tournament, saying he is "quietly confident" about their prospects. He attributed this confidence to the team's new head coach, Thomas Tuchel, who has gotten the team into a "really good frame of mind" and has them playing with "more freedom, more fluidity."
The prince also discussed his own experience growing up watching football, particularly his favorite team, Aston Villa. He revealed that his father, King Charles, is not a fan of football, and that his own interest in the sport was sparked by childhood friends. Prince William joked that watching Aston Villa's relegation years ago only made him a more devoted supporter, and that the team's performances still dictate his mood.
The conversation also turned to the upcoming FIFA World Cup, with Prince William promising to travel to the United States if England reaches the final. He also shared his thoughts on what would be the biggest culture shock for English fans traveling to the States to watch the tournament, citing the difference in beer taste and the size of the stadiums.
In a lighthearted moment, Prince William teased the Kelce brothers about calling the sport "soccer," correcting them that it's actually called "football." He also joked about America's 250th birthday, saying there were times when he thought the UK and the US would be together for those 250 years, and that it's a "good brotherhood."
Prince William's appearance on the podcast came just hours before Travis Kelce's reported wedding to Taylor Swift in New York City. Although the prince has a personal connection with Swift, having taken his children to her concert and joining her on stage for a charity event, it was reported that he and Princess Kate would not be attending the wedding.
