Samara Weaving to Play Emma Frost in Marvel’s ‘X-Men’ Reboot

Samara Weaving is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Emma Frost in the upcoming reboot of The X-Men. The Australian actress, 34, will portray the powerful telepath and member of the Hellfire Club, also known as the White Queen, according to reports from Variety and Deadline.

The casting follows an intensive search conducted by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige and director Jake Schreier. According to Deadline, the search for Emma Frost was one of the most difficult parts of the casting process. After meeting with several actresses, a final group tested shortly after the Fourth of July holiday. Weaving's audition was described as the best of the group.

The project marks the first major standalone X-Men reboot since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, a move that returned the film rights of the mutants to Marvel Studios. While some legacy characters have appeared in recent projects, this film is intended to introduce a new generation of mutants to the MCU.

Emma Frost is a complex figure in Marvel Comics, first appearing in the 1980s. Initially a villain, she eventually evolved into one of the X-Men's most prominent allies and influential leaders. Her abilities include formidable telepathy and the power to transform her body into organic diamond. In this diamond state, she becomes nearly indestructible, though she sacrifices her psychic abilities.

The character was previously portrayed by January Jones in X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Jake Schreier will direct the film following his work on Thunderbolts. The project gained momentum last spring after his hiring, and the studio later brought in Joanna Calo, co-creator of The Bear, and Lee Sung Jin, creator of Beef, to write the script. Variety noted that Michael Lesslie is also credited with the screenplay.

This role marks Weaving's first major entry into the Marvel franchise. She has built a reputation as a genre star and "scream queen" through roles in Scream VI, The Babysitter, and Ready or Not. Her recent work includes Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, Over Your Dead Body, and Carolina Caroline. She has also appeared in Bill & Ted Face the Music, Guns Akimbo, Babylon, and the Oscar-winning Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.

The news arrives amid a period of transition for Marvel Studios. During a recent Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con, the studio announced that Ryan Gosling will play Ghost Rider and David Jonsson will appear as the new king of Wakanda in Black Panther 3. These announcements follow a period where films such as The Fantastic Four: First Steps and Captain America: Brave New World failed to meet box-office expectations. However, early reports indicate that Spider-Man: Brand New Day, distributed by Sony, is already breaking records.

While The X-Men reboot is in development, fans will see a return of legacy mutant actors before the new film arrives. Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, and James Marsden are set to reprise their roles from the Fox era in the crossover film Avengers: Doomsday.

Marvel has not officially announced the casting, and a representative for Weaving declined to comment. Marvel did not respond to requests for comment.
