Most adults can safely consume up to 400 milligrams of caffeine per day, according to a new scientific statement from the American Heart Association (AHA). The guidance, published in the journal Circulation, suggests this limit typically translates to between three and five 8-ounce cups of black caffeinated coffee.
The updated recommendations come after nearly a decade without revised guidance on the world's most popular stimulant. The AHA stated on July 20 that moderate consumption of caffeinated coffee without added cream, flavors, or sugars may be linked to cardiovascular health benefits. These include a lower risk of stroke, heart failure, heart disease, and some irregular heart rhythms. Additionally, regular consumption of black coffee is associated with a lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Experimental studies suggest these benefits may stem from bioactive compounds in coffee that possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

The benefits vary depending on the source of caffeine and the individual. For tea drinkers, the 400 milligram ceiling allows for approximately 5.5 cups of black tea or 11 cups of green tea daily.
Risks of Energy Drinks and Supplements
The AHA issued a more cautious warning regarding energy drinks, energy shots, bars, gels, and caffeine-based supplements. These products often contain added ingredients that can accelerate how the body absorbs caffeine, potentially increasing the risk of irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) and high blood pressure.
Navjot Kaur Sobti, M.D., an interventional cardiologist and women's heart health expert at Northwell's Northern Westchester Hospital, noted that caffeine can be "hidden" in chocolate, pre-workout supplements, and certain over-the-counter medications, making label reading essential.
Individual Tolerance and Health Caveats
Medical experts emphasize that the 400 milligram limit is not a universal rule. Individual sensitivity is influenced by age, genetics, body size, medications, and existing medical conditions. Dr. Sobti stated that people with certain heart rhythm disorders, uncontrolled hypertension, or those who are pregnant may need to consume significantly less.
Dr. Laxmi Mehta, a cardiologist at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, noted that variability in sensitivity must be taken into account. Patients are encouraged to monitor for symptoms such as tremors, anxiety, palpitations, insomnia, racing heart, or jitteriness, which may indicate they have exceeded their personal tolerance even if they are under the 400 milligram threshold.
The AHA statement also highlighted specific effects on blood pressure and cholesterol:
- Blood Pressure: Drinking one to three cups of coffee daily is linked to a higher risk of developing high blood pressure. Conversely, drinking more than three cups is associated with a lower risk.
- Cholesterol: A coffee component called cafestol is linked to higher levels of low-density lipoprotein, known as "bad" cholesterol. Cafestol is found in boiled coffee, espresso, Turkish coffee, and French press, but is absent in instant coffee or coffee brewed with paper filters.
Laurence Conway, M.D., director of cardiology at MelroseWakefield Hospital, suggested that research has not found caffeine to be harmful to health, stating that up to five cups of coffee a day is associated with good cardiovascular health and potentially a longer life.
The American Heart Association concluded that more research is required to fully understand how different caffeine sources impact heart health and how those effects vary across different populations.
