Chelsea reach verbal agreement for £117m Morgan Rogers transfer
Chelsea have reached a verbal agreement with Aston Villa to sign Morgan Rogers in a deal worth £117million. The transfer fee for the 23-year-old attacking midfielder would establish a new British record, surpassing the £116m Manchester City paid for Elliot Anderson this summer. The move also represents a club-record signing for Chelsea, eclipsing the £106m paid for Enzo Fernandez in 2023.
Personal terms are already in place for a six-year contract running through to 2032, with an option for an additional 12 months. A medical is scheduled for Monday, once Rogers returns from the United States following England's World Cup campaign.
The acquisition comes as a blow to Arsenal, who had made Rogers their top forward target this summer. While the Gunners were reportedly growing confident after a major breakthrough
in talks, they were unwilling to meet the price point as it escalated. Rogers ultimately chose Chelsea as his preferred destination, with new manager Xabi Alonso and the club's project acting as the primary appeal.
Tactical Integration
Incoming boss Xabi Alonso was instrumental in brokering the deal. Analysts suggest Rogers may fit into a 3-4-2-1 system similar to the one Alonso used at Bayer Leverkusen. In that setup, two No 10s occupy half-spaces to feed a lone striker.
Rogers, described as a unique talent with refined ball-carrying ability, could operate on the right side. There is a possibility he will form a partnership with new signing Marco Palestra, a wing-back known for adventurous off-ball running. This would leave Cole Palmer more freedom to drift in a role similar to that of Florian Wirtz on the opposite side.
Rise from Middlesbrough
Rogers' ascent has been rapid. He joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 for an initial fee of £7m plus £8m in add-ons. During his time at Villa Park, he established himself as one of the Premier League's most in-form attacking midfielders, recording 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 appearances. His 2025-26 campaign saw him provide 14 goals and 12 assists in 55 appearances, helping Villa win the Europa League and qualify for the Champions League.
Middlesbrough will benefit significantly from the transfer due to a 20 per cent sell-on clause. According to reports, Boro stand to make a further £20.3m, bringing their total return on the player to £35.8m after having originally signed him from Manchester City in July 2023 for £1.1m.
Impact on Aston Villa
While Villa held out for a fee exceeding £100m, the departure of the 2025 Premier League Young Player of the Year comes amid a period of instability. The squad has seen the departure of Youri Tielemans to Manchester United, and Paris Saint-Germain are expected to activate Lucas Digne's release clause.
To mitigate these losses, Villa have already spent over £50m on Johan Manzambi and £35m for Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Joao Gomes, who underwent his medical on Friday. The club is also targeting Ibrahim Mbaye of Paris Saint-Germain and West Ham's Crysencio Summerville to bolster their wing options.
World Cup Performance
Rogers is currently with the England squad for the World Cup in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. He has featured in all six of his country's games so far, starting the final group-stage match against Panama and the semi-final defeat to Argentina. In that semi-final, Rogers provided the cross for Anthony Gordon to score England's only goal.
Rogers is slated to feature in the third-place play-off against France on Saturday, before traveling back to London for his medical on Monday.
