Ethan Wheatley joins Lincoln City on loan from Manchester United

Lincoln City have strengthened their attacking options with the signing of 20-year-old forward Ethan Wheatley from Manchester United. The attacker joins the newly-promoted Championship side on a season-long loan for the remainder of the 2026/27 campaign.

The move comes at a difficult start for the Imps, who currently sit on zero points from their first two league games. The club announced the deal on Monday, August 24, just two days after a 3-1 defeat to Portsmouth in their first home match in the EFL Championship since 1961.

Wheatley arrives at the ProAmpac Stadium with a reputation for versatility. Lincoln sporting director Jez George stated that the player can play anywhere across the top line and possesses a skill set including elite athleticism and pace, as well as technical ability.

The forward is expected to provide depth to a frontline managed by Tom Shaw and Chris Cohen, where he will compete for minutes with Rob Street, Freddie Draper, and new arrivals Tanto Olaofe and Mason Melia.

For Wheatley, the move represents a steady ascent through the English football tiers. Over the past 18 months, he has completed three other loan spells in the EFL with Walsall, Northampton Town and Bradford City. While at Northampton last season, the England youth international scored three league goals in 25 games.

Wheatley expressed his excitement about the step up in competition, saying:

"I’ve been waiting for this to get over the line for quite a while and I’m just really excited to get here, meet all the lads and get going. I played against Lincoln last season and didn’t really enjoy it, so I’m glad to be part of the team now."

The deal was not without obstacles. George noted that the signing had been delayed by a few weeks for reasons out of our hands. Additionally, the move follows a period of interest from Everton, who had previously considered a permanent transfer for the striker before pulling out of the race.

Wheatley has been a part of the Manchester United academy since he was nine years old and signed his first professional contract in January 2024. He made his senior debut against Sheffield United later that year, a milestone that made him the 250th academy graduate to represent the first team. In total, he has made four senior appearances for United, three in the Premier League and one in the Carabao Cup.

The departure is part of a broader squad reshuffle at Old Trafford under Michael Carrick. This summer has seen significant movement, including the permanent exit of Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli, Radek Vitek to Middlesbrough, and Ethan Williams to Peterborough United. Other academy players, such as Ethan Ennis and Tyler Fredricson, have also left permanently, while several others have departed on loan.

As United continue to assess Wheatley's long-term future, the club remains active in the market. United have agreed to a £70million deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba and are exploring options at left-back, including Barcelona's Alejandro Balde.

The transfer window remains open for eight more days, closing on September 1.
