France has advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup with a 1-0 win over Paraguay in the round of 16. The match, played in Philadelphia, was a closely contested and physical affair, with Paraguay's defensive strategy causing problems for the French attack.

Paraguay's approach was to congest the box, push their defensive lines close together, and hand possession to France. This plan worked for long stretches, with France struggling to penetrate and rarely managing to attack at speed. However, the French team eventually broke through in the 70th minute, when Kylian Mbappe scored the game's lone goal from a penalty kick.

The penalty was awarded after a VAR check, following a foul by Diego Gomez on Desire Doue. Mbappe's goal was his 19th in World Cup competition, and it sealed the win for France. The French team had dominated possession, completing 515 passes to Paraguay's 103, but had struggled to find the target against a resolute and physical Paraguayan defense.

Paraguay's campaign in the World Cup has come to an end, but the team can take pride in their performance. After a 16-year absence from the tournament, they returned with a competitive identity, tactical discipline, and collective commitment. They produced a major upset by eliminating Germany in the round of 32, and their defeat to France was a narrow one.

According to France coach Didier Deschamps, the match was a difficult one, and his team had to stay focused to avoid being provoked by Paraguay's physical approach. "It could have gone another way," Deschamps said. "If we did respond to provocation, it could have been bad. Germany did respond and I said, 'Please stay focused, focus on what we are able to do.'" France defender William Saliba also praised his team's discipline, saying, "They didn’t give us anything. They came at us hard. They tried to throw us off our game, but we stayed focused."

Paraguay's players and staff can also take pride in their individual performances. Miguel Almiron, Andrés Cubas, and Matías Galarza were among the standout players for the team, with Cubas earning rave reviews for his hard-nosed play in the center of the pitch. Galarza said, "I, personally, leave with a lot of pride. Proud to represent this country... We were in it, every single game. I am very proud of my team, of the group, the staff, the coaching staff. Proud to be Paraguayan."

France will now face Morocco in the quarterfinals on Thursday, July 9. The match promises to be a challenging one, with Morocco having beaten Canada earlier in the tournament.

The win over Paraguay was proof of France's ability to adapt to different opponents and playing styles. As France midfielder Rayan Cherki said, "Today, we reminded everyone that the French national team isn’t just about soccer, it’s about who’s willing to fight."
