South Africa vs England live: Score and latest updates from Nations Championship
The inaugural Nations Championship began on Saturday, July 4, 2026, with a high-stakes clash between South Africa and England at Ellis Park in Johannesburg. The match serves as the opening weekend for the new biennial competition, which pits six Northern Hemisphere teams against six Southern Hemisphere teams (including Japan and Fiji) in a battle of the hemispheres.
The Springboks established early dominance in the first half, scoring three rapid tries. Thomas du Toit opened the scoring in the 2nd minute after a lineout went long and the ball was worked quickly through the hands. Cheslin Kolbe followed in the 6th minute, stepping Murley to score after a break by Ox Nche through the middle. By the 12th minute, South Africa extended their lead when Kurt-Lee Arendse tucked the ball away in the left-hand corner, though Kolbe missed the conversion.
England struggled initially, facing a 17-0 deficit. They saw a potential try disallowed in the 17th minute when Jamie George touched down but was ruled offside because he was bound to the ruck and the scrumhalf had already touched the ball. England's momentum shifted in the 35th minute when Ellis Genge forced his way over from a tap kick, a score converted by Finn Smith.
The visitors continued their comeback just before the half, with George Martin powering over in the corner in the 40th minute for a converted try. This surge brought England back into the game after a nightmare opening, though the Springboks responded shortly after the break. In the 45th minute, Grant Williams scored via a rapier run, sniping at Ollie Chessum and fatigued English forwards, with Kolbe adding the extra two points.
The contest was marked by several tactical and disciplinary shifts. Kurt-Lee Arendse spent 10 minutes in the sin bin following a yellow card for a deliberate knock-down in the 28th minute. England also faced difficulties with the law directive around the maul, as Tom Curry and Alex Coles failed to follow referee James Doleman's instructions to vacate the space in front of the drive.
England, meanwhile, arrived in Johannesburg on a run of four consecutive defeats, seeking to recover from their worst-ever Six Nations performance. They were forced into a late change when George Furbank was ruled out with appendicitis, leading Marcus Smith to start at 15 and Henry Slade to move to the bench. Captain Maro Itoje was also rested for the July fixtures, leaving Jamie George to lead the squad.
The Nations Championship represents a significant shift in international rugby, replacing traditional summer and autumn tours. The 12 participating teams are locked into their conferences for three years with no promotion or relegation. The current round-robin phase consists of six matchdays—three in the summer and three in the autumn—culminating in a finals series in late November. In the 2026 edition, all finals will be held at Twickenham.
The match at Ellis Park was the first meeting between the two sides in South Africa since 2018. England has not defeated South Africa since the autumn of 2021. Following this opening fixture, England is expected to face Fiji and Argentina in the summer portion of the tournament.
