1Password has launched a new integration with Claude, allowing the AI agent to sign in to websites without seeing users' passwords. This feature, available now for Mac users, enables Claude to complete browser-based tasks that require account logins while keeping sensitive login information out of the AI model and Anthropic's systems.

When Claude needs to sign in to a website, it sends a request to 1Password, which shows the user exactly which credential is being requested and why. The user can then approve or deny the request using biometric authentication, such as Touch ID. If approved, 1Password fills the login directly on the website through a secure channel outside the agent's view, ensuring that passwords and one-time passcodes never enter Claude's context, memory, or Anthropic's systems.

This integration addresses a fundamental tension in agentic AI, where browser-based agents like Claude can navigate websites and complete tasks but have historically required users to either hand over their password or take control themselves. 1Password's solution allows Claude to request access to specific login items, which the user can approve or deny, without granting direct access to the vault.

The launch also introduces Agentic Mode, a feature in the 1Password browser extension that automatically locks down the vault when a compatible AI agent takes control. This mode ensures that only the credentials explicitly approved for the current task remain available, while the rest of the vault stays out of reach. Agentic Mode activates even if the 1Password-Claude integration is not configured and supports agents beyond Claude.

1Password for Claude is available now for business, family, and individual plan subscribers on Mac. The integration requires the 1Password desktop app, browser extension, Claude desktop app, and Claude browser extension. Currently, the integration only supports filling usernames, passwords, and one-time passwords from login items, with support for payment cards and identity information planned for a later update.

According to 1Password, the integration is designed to provide a secure and controlled way for users to grant Claude access to their credentials. The company emphasizes that Claude never receives permanent access to accounts and that each login request requires user approval, with permissions ending once the authorized task has finished.

1Password's CTO notes that the answer is not handing agents user secrets but rather letting a user give an agent permission to use a credential without letting the agent see it.

Experts, such as CNET's password manager expert, have expressed cautious optimism about the integration, noting that 1Password appears to have several good guardrails in place, particularly biometric authentication for each login.

As the ecosystem evolves, 1Password plans to expand Agentic Mode to additional browser-based AI agents. The company also aims to add support for payment cards and identity details in the future.
