Apple debuted the Apple Watch Series 12 and the rugged Apple Watch Ultra 4 at its recent "Surprise and shine" event. While pre-launch rumors correctly predicted that the industrial design would remain largely unchanged from recent iterations, the new generation brings notable under-the-hood advancements, material refreshes, and health monitoring features anchored by a new custom processor.

Hardware Design, Materials, and Durability

Although the average observer might struggle to distinguish the Series 12 from earlier generations at a glance, Apple introduced several aesthetic and material updates. Aluminum models swap out previous colorways for Light Gold and Dark Bronze, while titanium editions feature a refined Radiant Gold finish. Most notably, ceramic makes a return as a chassis material for the Series 12, offered in Night Blue and Pearl White finishes.

Durability also receives a boost. Ceramic Shield 2 is now extended to aluminum models, which Apple claims provides a substantial durability jump over the protective technology used on baseline predecessor devices. Weight specs shift slightly across the lineup; ceramic Series 12 models weigh 42.8 grams for the 42mm version and 52.9 grams for the 46mm variant, while the heaviest Apple Watch Ultra configuration reaches 63.1 grams.

Health Sensing System and Advanced Biometrics

At the core of the new wearable lineup is the Health Sensing System, which pairs redesigned optical and electrical heart sensors with the S11 chip — described by Apple as its most powerful wearable chip to date. According to Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Apple Watch Product Marketing, these upgrades deliver what the company claims is the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable.

The optical heart sensor incorporates larger, power-efficient green LEDs that measure heart rate every five seconds throughout the day. Additionally, heart rate variability (HRV), utilized as an indicator of stress and recovery, is now measured up to 24 times more frequently than in previous generations.

This biometric data feeds into a new software feature called Readiness. The Readiness tool analyzes a user's recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score to generate a simple 0 to 10 score accompanied by a clear, actionable recommendation categorized as Recover, Pace Yourself, Ready, or Go For It. Audio Intelligence and S11 Capabilities

Powered by the S11 processor, both the Series 12 and Ultra 4 support a suite of AI-driven audio features collectively termed Audio Intelligence. These include Live Rewind, which allows users to display the last 15 seconds of a nearby conversation as text on the watch screen via a double-press of the Digital Crown; Siri Recap, which generates conversation summaries; and Sound Recognition to alert deaf and hard-of-hearing users to critical noises like alarms or a baby crying. Apple notes that these audio functions are processed entirely on-device and protected by hardware-isolated components to ensure user privacy.

Battery Life and Performance Metrics

Battery performance sees generational improvements, particularly for the adventure-focused model and specialized workout tracking modes.

Pricing and Market Availability

Despite the hardware and sensor upgrades, baseline pricing remains stable compared to previous iterations. The standard aluminum Apple Watch Series 12 starts at $399, while the Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at $799. Meanwhile, the newly reintroduced ceramic models are priced at $899, marking a reduction from historical ceramic tier pricing.
