Lenovo Legion reveals C700 cloud gaming handheld, arriving in August

Lenovo's Legion brand has announced a new handheld device, the Legion C700, shifting the focus from local processing power toward cloud gaming. The company shared the news via a post on Weibo, confirming a co-branded partnership with the START cloud gaming service from Tencent.

Promo artwork for the device features the tagline 打破门槛，即刻开战, which translates to break down the barriers, jump into battle instantly. Lenovo has indicated that further details will be provided in August, the same window in which the company is expected to launch the Y700 Wuji compact tablet.

The C700 appears to draw design inspiration from the existing Legion Go series, such as the Legion Go S 512GB. Renderings show a white handheld with an asymmetric, Xbox-style layout, placing the D-pad and left stick on the lower left and the ABXY buttons and right stick on the upper right. The device includes back buttons and a vented section on the rear. A mock-up of the screen shows a grid of game thumbnails sourced from Tencent START.

This effort represents a return to a previous concept for Lenovo and Tencent. In 2021, Lenovo developed an Android-based cloud device called the Legion Play featuring a Tencent-made launcher, but that project was shelved before it could be released.

While community members on the RetroHandhelds.gg Discord have speculated about whether the triggers are analog, Lenovo has not confirmed this detail. The company has also withheld information regarding the chipset, battery capacity, display specifications, pricing, and whether the device will be available outside of China.

Expanding the Legion Handheld Portfolio

The C700 arrives as Lenovo continues to experiment with the handheld form factor. At MWC, the company showcased the Legion Go Fold, a concept device featuring a flexible OLED display. This prototype can transition between a fully extended 11.6-inch display and a bent 7.7-inch panel to improve portability. The Legion Go Fold concept includes detachable controllers and a strip of pogo pins to connect a wireless keyboard, effectively turning the handheld into a miniature laptop.

The Fold prototype features an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V chip, 32GB of RAM, and a 48WHr battery. It also includes a 1-inch OLED display on the right gamepad for widgets and a touchpad. However, Lenovo has no concrete plans to put the Fold into production.

Separately, Lenovo is preparing the Legion Go 2, the successor to the original 2023 Legion Go. First announced at CES 2025, the Legion Go 2 is designed to compete with the MSI Claw A8 and the Xbox Ally and Ally X. While not officially confirmed, hints from Lenovo Latin America's social media team suggest a possible launch window in September 2025.

The Legion Go 2 is expected to run Windows 11 and retain modular features like a built-in kickstand and detachable controllers. A prototype of the Go 2 shown at CES 2025 featured:

Rumors suggest Lenovo may offer two configurations of the Go 2: one with the Z2 Extreme chip and another with a less powerful Z2 chipset featuring an 8-core Zen4 processor. A prototype video leak suggested a price of around $1,000 USD for a high-end configuration, though this remains unconfirmed. For comparison, the original Legion Go launched at $699 USD.
