PlayStation Plus reveals July 2026 lineup featuring Modern Warfare III

Sony has announced the PlayStation Plus Monthly Games lineup for July 2026, featuring a mix of a blockbuster first-person shooter, a tactical strategy sequel, and a retro-inspired RPG. The titles will be available for download starting Tuesday, July 7, and will remain available to claim until Monday, August 3, 2026.

The selection is available to subscribers across all tiers, including Essential, Extra, and Premium. All three titles are available natively for both PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 platforms.

Headline Title: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III

The centerpiece of the July lineup is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III. This version is provided as the Cross-Gen Bundle. The title allows players to continue the narrative of Task Force 141 and Captain Price as they face Vladimir Makarov, following the events of Modern Warfare II.

The package includes an open-world PvE Zombies mode — which featured the franchise's largest Zombies map at the time of release — and multiplayer modes utilizing modernized versions of the 16 launch maps from the 2009 Modern Warfare 2. While the game features improved graphics and sound design, and a campaign with branching narratives, it has been a point of contention among players.

The game faced a rough reception from critics and fans upon its 2023 launch. IGN gave the campaign a 4/10, describing it as underbaked, rehashed, and cobbled together from multiplayer parts. Additionally, the title has drawn scrutiny over its microtransaction models. Some gamers argue that purchasable weapon upgrades and skins create a pay-to-win environment that undermines skill in competitive play.

Despite these controversies, the release is timed to prepare players for the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, which is scheduled for release on October 23.

Strategic and Indie Offerings

Joining the shooter are two titles focused on deeper strategy and exploration:

  • For the King II: A sequel to a critically acclaimed strategy game, this title blends tabletop RPG mechanics with roguelite structure and turn-based combat. Set in the land of Fahrul, players form a party, either solo or in up to four-player online co-op, to overthrow the tyrannical Queen Rosomon. The game utilizes procedurally generated maps and grid-based battles where outcomes are determined by dice rolls.
  • CrossCode: A 2D action JRPG featuring 16-bit SNES-style visuals. Set in a futuristic MMO world, it combines a sci-fi narrative with fast-paced combat and intricate environmental puzzles. It is noted for a projectile-based attack system and deep RPG progression through gear and character development.

Subscription Details and Transitions

Subscribers must claim these titles before the August 3 deadline to keep them in their digital libraries. Once claimed, the games remain playable as long as the user maintains an active PlayStation Plus subscription. If a subscription lapses, access to the claimed games is lost.

This lineup replaces the June games, which include Grounded: Fully Yoked Edition, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, and Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. Those titles will be available to claim only until Monday, July 6.

The inclusion of diverse indie and strategy titles alongside a AAA blockbuster reflects a broader trend in the industry toward variety. Some analysts suggest this diversity caters to a wider audience and may influence how Sony structures future releases. This is especially relevant as the Essential tier remains the primary option for immediate access to these titles during the phased rollout of trials for higher tiers.

Outside of the monthly service, Sony has announced it will stop producing physical discs for new games starting in 2028.
