Onimusha: Way of the Sword release date moved up to September 4, 2026
Capcom has announced that Onimusha: Way of the Sword will launch earlier than originally planned. On July 1, 2026, the company confirmed the release date has been moved up to September 4, 2026.
The game was previously scheduled for a later September launch. According to theouterhaven.net, the initial date was September 25, 2026, while bleedingcool.com reported the original date as September 24. This shift allows players to enter the title nearly three weeks sooner than expected.
This release marks the first new mainline entry in the series in 20 years. The franchise, which first debuted in 2001, is known for blending history with Japanese folklore and featuring warriors who wield the mystical power of the Oni against the Genma, monsters intent on conquering the world.
The new installment is set in a dark fantasy version of Edo-period Kyoto. In this era of relative peace, the city has been infested by the demonic Genma and twisted into an unsettling place. Players will control Miyamoto Musashi, a samurai equipped with a mystical Oni Gauntlet, as he battles the invading demons.
Combat in the title will return with established series mechanics, specifically Soul Absorption and the Issen
counterattack, while updated swordplay is intended for modern audiences. Despite the action-adventure nature of the game, sources emphasize that the title is not a Soulslike.
The schedule change has impacted how Capcom is handling pre-launch incentives. The pre-order bonus has been converted into an early adopter bonus. Players who secure the Premium Deluxe, Deluxe, or Standard editions by September 24 will receive the following rewards:
- A Sealed Curse sword appearance
- A Lion Dog charm that provides a
special effect
For those seeking an immediate look at the gameplay, a demo is currently available on the Xbox Store, PlayStation Store, and PC via the Epic Games Store and Steam. Players who use the demo and maintain their save data will be eligible for a Kubi Akari charm bonus upon the full game's arrival.
While Capcom provided no specific reason for the date advancement, bleedingcool.com suggested the move may be a last-minute effort to avoid competing with other September 2026 titles, such as Control Resonant and Marvel's Wolverine. This is particularly notable as Capcom held a Spotlight event just one week prior to this announcement without mentioning the date change.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be available on September 4, 2026, for the following platforms:
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox Series X|S
- Nintendo Switch 2
- PC (Steam)
