Pilot may have ‘tried to hijack, crash’ airliner flying to Israel

A routine commercial flight descended into chaos on Wednesday when a violent cockpit confrontation aboard a FlyDubai jet threatened the lives of everyone on board. Flight FZ1073, operating from Dubai to Tel Aviv, became the center of an international security crisis after the co-pilot allegedly attacked the aircraft's commander. Israeli officials later described the episode as a potential suicide-attack attempt aimed at targeting an Israeli city.

The Boeing 737 MAX aircraft was carrying roughly 150 to 174 people when the crisis began. According to accounts from Israeli officials, passengers, and crew, the co-pilot attacked Capt. Smit Machchhar, an Indian national. Indian embassy officials in Saudi Arabia later confirmed that Capt. Machchhar is in a stable condition after sustaining serious wounds. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alleged that the attacker not only stabbed his fellow pilot but actively tried to crash the airliner.

"When I entered, I saw the attacker on the instruments, between the two seats...there were no pilots in the seats. One was down, one was on the instruments. And another guy came in with me. I grabbed the attacker, put him in a chokehold, and pulled him - first and foremost - outside."

Sharir recounted pulling at the controls after subduing the aggressor. Additional assistance came from other aviation professionals traveling as passengers. Two off-duty pilots who were on board ahead of a connection flight from Tel Aviv, including one identified by a passenger as British, helped take control of the aircraft and land it alongside the remaining crew.

A FlyDubai spokesperson confirmed that an altercation took place on Flight FZ1073 and stated that the plane was successfully secured by on-duty crew members traveling on the flight. The airline noted that an investigation into the motive behind the incident is currently underway.

Security Repercussions and Next Steps

Following the thwarted disaster, Israeli security services expressed concern that the incident represented a planned attempt to crash the aircraft into an Israeli city, invoking comparisons to a 9/11-style attack. In response to the high-altitude emergency, the Israeli government ordered immediate policy changes regarding international aviation.
