President Donald Trump has issued a stark ultimatum to Iran, stating that the Strait of Hormuz must be reopened or the Islamic Republic will face severe military consequences. The warning comes as the United States, Iran, and Oman reportedly work toward an interim agreement to ease regional tensions and restore access to the strategic waterway.

During an interview with Fox News on Tuesday, Trump linked the reopening of the strait directly to ongoing diplomatic efforts. He warned that if a deal is not reached, Tehran will be hit really hard.

The president stated that the strait would be opened very soon, but maintained that a strong response is inevitable if Iran withdraws from negotiations. A primary condition for the U.S. Is that Tehran must not develop nuclear weapons. Trump asserted that while Iran currently cannot acquire such a weapon, the restriction is going to be formal.

The current diplomatic push follows the collapse of a 14-point Memorandum of Understanding between Washington and Tehran last month. According to Axios, which cited a US official and two regional sources, the three nations are now close to finalizing an interim arrangement to reopen the waterway.

Trump claimed that the shift toward talks was initiated by Tehran. He said he had previously been prepared to launch a major attack on Iran—which he described as the biggest since World War II—before Iranian officials contacted him.

"They called me and said, very politely, 'Please, can we talk? Can we talk?'... I said, 'Yes, we can talk. Let's get it done. Finally, let's get it done,'"

On Wednesday, Trump signaled that discussions are moving along very nicely and that a lot of progress has been made. Speaking to reporters as he departed Los Angeles for Las Vegas during a two-day West Coast trip, the president suggested that more clarity on the situation would emerge within 48 hours.

Despite these claims of progress, Trump noted that Tehran has not publicly confirmed the developments. He remarked that Iranian officials have expressed interest in talks, though he observed, The funny thing is, they never mention that. He suggested it would be very smart for Iran to reach an agreement, warning that if they don't make a deal, it's going to be too bad.

The president's comments occur amid a broader domestic schedule. His trip to Los Angeles and Las Vegas is intended to promote his economic agenda, highlight the Working Families Tax Cuts, and campaign for the November midterm elections.

The outcome of the interim negotiations involving the US, Iran, and Oman remains uncertain. The president has indicated that a definitive update on the progress of the talks and the status of the Strait of Hormuz may be available within the next 48 hours.
