Multiple killed in shooting at In-N-Out Burger in Twin Falls, Idaho

A shooting at an In-N-Out Burger restaurant in Twin Falls, Idaho, left multiple people dead and others injured on Saturday, August 1, 2026. The violence occurred at a location near a busy shopping center that had opened just about a week earlier, on July 24, as part of the chain's expansion into Idaho.

Twin Falls Police Chief Matthew Hicks confirmed during a media briefing that the shooter is among the dead. Police have not yet released the total number of fatalities or the identity and motive of the gunman.

Chief Hicks described the event as a very chaotic scene and stated that officials were still notifying next of kin. He noted that hundreds of people were present in the area at the time of the shooting.

Twin Falls County Commissioner Brent Reinke reported learning of the incident just before 4 p.m. Reinke said Sheriff Jack Johnson informed him that five people were hurt, though it remains unclear if that figure includes those who died.

Witnesses described a scene of sudden violence and panic. Lane Koehn, 34, told The Associated Press he was at a stoplight when he saw a person carrying an AR-style rifle emerge from the drive-thru. Koehn reported seeing a man with a pistol fire at the shooter. Koehn also witnessed an In-N-Out employee drag a fellow coworker, who was bleeding from a gunshot wound in her chest, across the parking lot. Koehn, the employee, and the man with the pistol waited with the wounded woman until paramedics arrived.

Koehn said the shooter fired at least three or four rounds, but it was not clear if any specific individuals were targeted. He added that police ordered him to evacuate because the shooting was still active.

Other patrons experienced the chaos while waiting for food. Twin Falls resident Haley Dodaro, 43, was in the drive-thru line with her mother when she saw workers and customers bolting from the restaurant and running across the road. Dodaro initially suspected a fire, but a man in a reflective vest directing traffic informed her there was a shooter.

Video captured by a driver across the street showed a person dressed in black carrying a long rifle. The footage shows the individual walking to a white car, opening the driver-side door, and popping the trunk to reach inside. The driver filming the scene fled quickly due to fears the shooter was retrieving more weapons. Other cell phone video credited to Kevin Bell Jr. Shows people fleeing the restaurant.

In response to the emergency, police closed nearby roads and advised the public to avoid the area. St. Luke’s Magic Valley spokesperson Taylor Marschner stated that the medical center worked closely with emergency responders and law enforcement to manage the situation.

Twin Falls is a city of about 56,000 people, located approximately 130 miles southeast of Boise and about 75 miles north of the Nevada border. Investigators have begun interviewing witnesses and are asking anyone with information to contact authorities.
