A shift toward individuality and a departure from one-size-fits-all ceremonies are redefining the wedding industry. According to Pinterest’s 2026 Wedding Trend Report, modern brides are increasingly rejecting conventional bridal norms in favor of celebrations that reflect their personal style and unique details.

This movement toward the alt-bride is particularly evident in Gen Z's fashion choices. Pinterest reported a rise in searches for black gothic wedding dress, alt wedding rings, and red veil wedding. The platform also noted a 1,330 percent increase in searches for celestial whimsigoth. Dark romance is becoming a central theme, featuring Goth-inspired details, moody florals, and rich red vintage cakes.

While vintage elements like lace accents and heart-shaped cakes remain, they are being reimagined with more edge. Accessories are also becoming more unconventional. There is growing momentum for cool-girl alternatives to the traditional veil, with rising searches for Juliet cap veils, fascinators, and custom wedding hats. Other trending accessories include bodychain body jewelry and two tooth grillz, though the latter are often used for bachelorette parties or honeymoons. In footwear, there is increased interest in ballerina heels and shoes in plum and green.

The desire for practicality is influencing gown design. Brides are seeking multipurpose styles that allow for a two-in-one look without multiple purchases, such as boleros, overskirts, and caped veils.

The trend toward individuality extends to the atmosphere and venue. Couples are opting for immersive experiences in nature-driven settings, such as cabins, mountains, and ranches, or urban spots like speakeasies and jazz clubs. Decor choices are splitting into two opposing aesthetics: a dark palette of fig, merlot, olive, and plum, and the opalite aesthetic, which has seen a 2,710 percent rise in searches. This shimmering, iridescent look potentially takes a cue from a Taylor Swift song.

The Gen Z Approach to Tradition

While some are embracing alternative styles, others are returning to classics. The Knot 2025 Real Weddings Study, which analyzed data from nearly 17,000 U.S. Couples married in 2024 and those marrying in 2025, found that Gen Z is embracing traditional elements at higher rates than millennials. This is attributed to family influence and a younger marrying age.

According to The Knot, Gen Z is more likely to participate in the following traditions compared to millennials:

  • Changing last names upon marriage (85% vs. 73%)
  • Cake-cutting (77% vs. 67%)
  • Bouquet tosses (38% vs. 23%)

However, Gen Z is also pioneering new traditions. They favor unplugged ceremonies (62% vs. 54%) and grand exits (43% vs. 26%) more than their millennial counterparts. They are also integrating technology into their celebrations, such as laser shows, betting apps for guests, and glambots. For speechwriting and design recommendations, couples are turning to AI.

Raina Moskowitz, CEO of The Knot Worldwide, stated that Gen Z's influence is undeniable, ranging from quiet luxury and old money aesthetics to gamified technology. She noted that weddings play a powerful role in fostering connections in a tech-driven world.

Economic Pressures and the "Tiny Wedding"

Economic and sociopolitical instability are shaping how couples plan their finances. The Knot found that 84% of 2025 couples are looking forward to their wedding more than any other event this year. Despite macroeconomic pressures, 77% believe weddings remain as important as ever.

Average wedding costs in 2024 decreased by $2,000 to a national average of $33,000. However, the cost varies wildly by location. In Utah, the average was $18,000, while in New Jersey, it rose to $57,000. Many couples are finding their initial budgets fall short, leading 54% to adjust their decor and guest lists.

This financial pressure has contributed to the rise of tiny weddings, also known as micro-weddings or minimonies. These events typically feature guest lists of under 20 people, allowing for a focus on quality of experience over quantity. Such weddings are often more budget-friendly, with some costs ranging between $5,000 and $20,000, and others as low as $10,000 for the venue, photographer, and cake.

Tiny weddings allow couples to prioritize specific details, such as a personal musician or a high-end dress, while maintaining a relaxed atmosphere in settings like private homes, gardens, or boutique hotels.

Current Wedding Logistics

The Knot reported that couples are inviting an average of 116 guests, though Gen Z averages higher at 131 compared to 113 for millennials. The top priorities for couples are the dress (91%), venue (90%), and photographer (87%).

In terms of timing, September 20, 2025, is expected to be the most popular wedding date this year, followed by October 25. October remains the most popular month overall at 17%.

For those seeking destination weddings, the most searched-for locations on The Knot Vendor Marketplace include:

  • San Diego and Santa Barbara, California
  • Chicago, Illinois
  • New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Long Island, New York

The most requested gift cards on The Knot Registry are from Delta Airlines, Airbnb, and Home Depot, while honeymoon funds and new home funds remain the top cash fund requests.
