Bonnie Tyler, 80s pop star and singer of Total Eclipse of the Heart, dies at 75
Bonnie Tyler, the Welsh singer celebrated for the gravelly, commanding vocals that defined 1980s power ballads, has died at age 75. Her family and team announced on Thursday, July 9, 2026, via a Facebook message and website statement, that she passed away unexpectedly in a Portuguese hospital while being treated for an illness.
Tyler had lived in Portugal and was hospitalized in Faro in May for emergency intestinal surgery. According to reports from The Sun, she had experienced intense abdominal pain in April following inconclusive tests in London, which later revealed a serious tear in her bowel. Following her surgery, she was placed in a medically induced coma to aid her recovery. While she eventually awoke from the coma, Portuguese media claimed she suffered a cardiac arrest during that process. Her management previously stated she remained very unwell and in intensive care, leading to the cancellation of all concerts scheduled through August.
Born Gaynor Hopkins on June 8, 1951, in the village of Skewen near Swansea, Tyler was the daughter of a coal miner and a homemaker. She grew up in a council house with five siblings. She began her career singing cover versions in local clubs and working in a grocery shop. After being discovered by talent scout Roger Bell while singing with a soul band under the name Sherene Davis, she signed with RCA. She chose her stage name, Bonnie Tyler, by compiling lists of first and last names from a newspaper.
A defining moment in her artistry occurred in 1977 following surgery to remove nodules from her vocal cords. After being told to rest her voice, she screamed in frustration, which permanently altered her tone. She later described the result as a voice that was huskier than before, and had more of an edge
.
This distinctive sound fueled her early success with the 1977 hit It’s a Heartache
, which reached No 3 in the US and No 4 in the UK. However, her commercial peak arrived in the 1980s through a partnership with producer Jim Steinman. Tyler had courted Steinman, a collaborator of Meat Loaf. The result was the 1983 epic Total Eclipse of the Heart
. Though Tyler initially worried the song was too long for radio, the shortened version became a transatlantic No 1 hit, topping charts in Canada, Australia, and Ireland. The song has since surpassed 1 billion streams and views, often spiking during solar and lunar eclipses.
Steinman also wrote the uptempo Holding Out for a Hero
, featured on the 1984 Footloose soundtrack, which peaked at No 2 in the UK. Tyler’s versatility extended to disco-pop, such as (The World is Full of) Married Men
, and collaborations with Giorgio Moroder on Here She Comes
, which earned her a Grammy nomination.
While her commercial dominance in the US and UK ebbed, Tyler remained a powerhouse in Western Europe. In 1991, her album Bitterblue, produced by Dieter Bohlen, topped charts in several countries. In 2003, a bilingual re-recording of Total Eclipse of the Heart
with Kareen Antonn spent 10 weeks at No 1 in France.
In 2013, Tyler represented the United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest in Sweden with the song Believe in Me
. She finished 19th out of 26 countries, though she described the experience as awesome
.
Beyond the charts, Tyler's career included a role in George Martin's audio adaptation of Under Milk Wood and a 2019 Vatican Christmas concert performed before Pope Francis. In 2022, she was awarded an MBE for her services to music. Her recording career continued until recently, with a final studio album, The Best Is Yet to Come, in 2021 and a 2025 collaboration with David Guetta and Hypaton titled Together
.
Tyler married property developer and former Olympic judoka Robert Sullivan in 1973. The couple had no children, though Tyler spoke of her large extended family, including 16 nieces and nephews.
