Harry Styles collapsed during a performance at Wembley Stadium on Friday, June 26, after appearing to choke on water. The incident occurred as the 32-year-old musician was performing the concert closer As It Was during his 12-night Together, Together residency in London.

The collapse followed a routine stage maneuver known to fans as the whale, in which Styles sprays a spout of water into the air. According to fan-captured footage and witness accounts, Styles appeared to inhale some of the water, leading to a coughing fit. He then fell to the ground, lying on his back while heaving and patting his chest.

One concertgoer told the Daily Mail that Styles managed to perform the whale while suppressing chokes before falling to the floor, where he continued to cough and splutter. The musician remained on the stage for approximately 17 to 20 seconds, during which time he loosened his tie and rested his hands on his abdomen. He eventually pulled himself back up and appeared to be in good spirits, waving goodbye to the crowd before exiting the stage.

Heatwave and Health Concerns

The incident took place during a record-breaking heatwave in the U.K. The Met Office reported that Friday marked the third consecutive day the U.K. Broke its June temperature record, with temperatures reaching 37.3 degrees Celsius in Suffolk and 37.5 degrees Celsius in London. Met Office Chief Meteorologist Andy Page had previously issued a Red Warning for London and the southeast, noting that an exceptional spell of hot and humid weather was gripping the region.

Fans on social media expressed immediate concern, with some questioning why staff did not check on the singer. Some viewers speculated that the extreme heat may have triggered an asthma attack, noting that Styles has used inhalers onstage in the past and has previously asked audiences if others have asthma.

Others viewed the event as a minor mishap. One commenter noted that Styles later told fans it just went down the wrong hole and that he was okay. Another suggested the fall may have been a professional choice, claiming Styles knew to lie down and cough for theatrics.

Physical exertion was a factor for both the performer and the crowd. A report by The Odd Company suggested that the energy expenditure for fans attending the show matches running a 10K in 60 minutes. For his part, Styles was spotted running 10km from his home in Hampstead to Wembley on Friday before his two-hour set. Witnesses noted his blue shirt was drenched with sweat after only two songs.

Venue and Tour Context

Wembley Stadium implemented emergency measures to protect the 80,000 nightly attendees, including offering half-priced water, providing free sunscreen, and relaxing the water bottle policy to allow 500ml metal or hard plastic containers. Styles had previously urged the crowd to stay hydrated and told them, we can stop at any time if anyone needed assistance.

The London residency is part of a global tour supporting his latest album, Kiss All the Time. Disco, Occasionally. To avoid burnout, Styles opted for multi-night residencies in select cities rather than a traditional world tour. According to a source cited by Us Weekly, Styles has spent the last few years slowing down, stepping back and finding peace.

Despite the Friday collapse, Styles returned to the stage for his scheduled performance on Saturday, June 27. He will conclude his Wembley residency on Saturday, July 4, before traveling to São Paulo, Brazil, and Mexico City. His tour will then move to the United States for a 30-date residency at Madison Square Garden starting August 26, before ending in Australia.
