Jurassic Park actor Sam Neill dies at 78

Sam Neill, the New Zealand actor who achieved global stardom as the paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died in Sydney, Australia. He was 78.

His family announced the sudden and unexpected passing on Monday, July 13, via a post on the actor's Instagram account. The statement noted that Neill was surrounded by family and passed with dignity. The whānau — the Māori term for extended family — expressed their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent's Private Hospital for their care.

The death comes after a high-profile battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare type of non-Hodgkin lymphoma, which Neill disclosed in 2023. According to his family, Neill remained cancer-free at the time of his death.

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill in 1947 in Omagh, Northern Ireland, he moved to New Zealand at the age of 7. He later adopted the name "Sam" because there were too many Nigels at his school. After attending boarding school in Christchurch and finishing college, he took the lead in 1977's Sleeping Dogs, which was the first feature film made in New Zealand in more than a decade.

Neill's career trajectory saw him move from independent art house cinema to massive Hollywood blockbusters. He gained international recognition in 1979 for his performance in Gillian Armstrong's My Brilliant Career. He was part of a wave of talent from the late 1970s Australian film explosion that included figures such as Mel Gibson, Geoffrey Rush, and Jane Campion.

His most defining role for many fans remained Dr. Alan Grant. First appearing in the 1993 Steven Spielberg film based on the Michael Crichton novel, Neill returned for Jurassic Park III in 2001 and Jurassic World Dominion in 2022.

Beyond the dinosaur franchise, Neill's filmography included:

  • The Piano, where he played the husband of Holly Hunter's character.
  • Event Horizon, a sci-fi horror where his character poked out his own eyes.
  • Dead Calm, starring alongside Nicole Kidman.

On television, Neill earned Primetime Emmy nominations for his role in the 1998 mini-series Merlin and as the narrator for Wild New Zealand in 2017. His more recent work included the 2024 Peacock series Apples Never Fall.

Outside of acting, Neill was a vintner and the founder of the Two Paddocks vineyard in the Central Otago region of New Zealand's South Island, producing riesling and pinot noir.

In 2022, Neill was knighted as a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for his outstanding contribution to film, a title approved by the late Queen Elizabeth II.

Neill is survived by four children and eight grandchildren. He is also the author of the 2023 memoir Did I Ever Tell You This?

The family has asked for privacy as they navigate the loss and stated that more details will be shared later.
