Rosie O’Donnell has provided new insight into her departure from daytime television, identifying a specific financial milestone that signaled the end of her eponymous talk show. In an interview published July 11, 2026, the broadcaster and actress revealed that she decided to conclude The Rosie O’Donnell Show in 2002 after discovering her bank account had reached $100 million.

The program, which ran for six seasons beginning in 1996, served as a fixture of late-1990s and early-2000s daytime television, recognized for its focus on Broadway, celebrity interviews, and a warm, approachable style. Despite the show’s enduring popularity, O’Donnell viewed the $100 million figure as a clear point of completion.

Following the discovery of this balance, Warner Bros. Reportedly attempted to secure her return for two additional seasons with a contract offer of $100 million. O’Donnell declined the proposal, noting that her motivation for working had shifted away from the accumulation of wealth. She stated that she had reached a point where she could support her family, participate in philanthropy, and provide assistance to strangers. Her decision was driven by a desire to be physically present for her children’s daily activities, such as school plays and softball games. O’Donnell shares four children—Parker, Chelsea, Blake, and Vivienne—with her ex-wife Kelli Carpenter, and a youngest child, Clay, with her late ex-wife Michelle Rounds.

Reflecting on the decision, O’Donnell expressed skepticism toward the pursuit of wealth beyond one's needs, remarking that she does not understand the mindset of billionaires or those who define success solely through financial gain. "Because I already have that money, and if I think I need more, something’s wrong with me," she noted.

Although she left the daily hosting format in 2002, O’Donnell has maintained a presence in the industry. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, she partnered with Broadway.com to host a one-night-only special of her talk show on her YouTube channel, which featured guests such as Patti LuPone, Ben Platt, Kristin Chenoweth, and Billy Porter. The production raised $600,000 for the Actors Fund. Currently, O’Donnell is performing a one-woman Broadway show titled Common Knowledge, which explores themes of motherhood and childhood loss.

Looking back at her time as a talk show host, O’Donnell has characterized the period as a mixture of memorable encounters. She has identified Barbra Streisand as a favorite guest and praised the comedic instincts of Martin Short. Regarding her interview with Keanu Reeves, she described him as a kind person, albeit one who was shy in a talk-show setting.
