The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has formally submitted the names and credentials of Atiku Abubakar and Rotimi Amaechi to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) nomination portal. The move comes as parties begin fulfilling statutory requirements for the 2027 general election.

Bolaji Abdullahi, the National Publicity Secretary for the ADC, confirmed the upload through a post on his verified X handle. He described the submission as a milestone in the party's electoral preparations.

"We are pleased to announce that we have successfully uploaded the names and particulars of the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar (GCON), and our Vice Presidential Candidate, Rotimi Amaechi (CON), to the nomination portal of the @INECNigeria."

Abdullahi stated that the step reflects the party's goal to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative built on competence, unity, and national renewal.

The Path to the Ticket

The pairing of Atiku and Amaechi follows a primary election held in May. Atiku secured the presidential ticket after defeating economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen and former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi.

Following the primary, Amaechi accepted the nomination as the running mate. Party leadership views the ticket as a strategic geographic balance, pairing a seasoned administrator from the North-East with a prominent figure from the South-South region. Amaechi previously served as the governor of Rivers State and the Minister of Transportation. He had sought the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress before joining the ADC.

For Atiku, the ADC nomination represents another attempt at the presidency. He previously contested the office under the Peoples Democratic Party in 2019 and 2023.

Broadening the Electoral Field

The ADC is not the only party utilizing the portal. The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has also uploaded its flagbearers, despite an ongoing legal dispute regarding its registration status.

Peter Obi, the NDC presidential candidate, confirmed the completion of his nomination form. On his Facebook page, Obi used the process to call for transparency, suggesting that INEC publish the academic credentials of all candidates to build public trust.

Obi questioned whether politics should be the primary preoccupation of the country given issues such as widespread hunger, insecurity, and the diversion of public funds. He argued that a sound-minded leadership would address these challenges as national emergencies.

The NDC vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, also confirmed his nomination was successfully uploaded. Kwankwaso reported that he had been conducting productive consultations across North-West states, an update he shared following a visit from NDC National Leader Henry Seriake Dickson at his Abuja residence.

These submissions occur as political parties intensify efforts to meet the INEC timetable for the 2027 polls. The ADC has repeatedly stated its intention to position itself as a major opposition platform against the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
