BJP announces major organisational reshuffle ahead of 2029 elections
The Bharatiya Janata Party announced a comprehensive organisational overhaul on Monday, 17 August 2026, unveiling a new national team of office-bearers under national president Nitin Nabin. The restructuring includes the appointment of 13 national vice presidents, eight national general secretaries, and 16 national secretaries.
The reshuffle sees the return of former Union minister Smriti Irani, who has been appointed as a national general secretary. This marks Irani's first major organisational role since her defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections in Amethi. Other national general secretaries include Biplab Deb, a former chief minister of Tripura, as well as Vinod Tawde, Sunil Bansal, Satish Poonia, Gajendra Patel, Harish Dwivedi, and Sanjay Bhatia. B.L. Santhosh remains the National General Secretary (Organisation).
Among the 13 national vice presidents are Ram Madhav, former Rajasthan chief minister Vasundhara Raje Scindia, Tirath Singh Rawat, Baijayant Jay Panda, D. Purandeshwari, Rekha Verma, Varshaben Narendrabhai Doshi, Bharti Pravin Pawar, Manpreet Singh Badal, Lal Singh Arya, M. Nagaraja, Tariq Mansoor, and Madhuchandra Kar. Six of these vice-presidential roles are held by women.
Union minister Piyush Goyal has been named the national treasurer, a position he is likely to hold alongside his government duties.
Digital and Youth Overhaul
The party has implemented a complete replacement of its social media team. Deepak Mhaskey from Chhattisgarh replaces Amit Malviya, who had led the IT cell for nearly a decade, as the new chief. The new digital leadership includes social media coordinators Priti Gandhi, Shivanand Dwivedi, Alok Bhatt, and Arun Yadav.
A broader reset has occurred across the party's demographic outreach wings, with new presidents appointed for all seven wings:
- Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM): Hemang Joshi replaces Tejasvi Surya.
- Mahila Morcha: Roop Kumari Choudhary replaces Vanathi Srinivasan.
- OBC Morcha: Amarpal Maurya replaces K. Laxman.
- Kisan Morcha: Bansilal Gurjar replaces Rajkumar Chahar.
- ST Morcha: Mannalal Rawat replaces Samir Oraon.
- Minority Morcha: Kunwar Basit Ali replaces Jamal Siddiqui.
The party also appointed national secretaries including Sandeep Pathak, a recent entrant from the Aam Aadmi Party, and former Congress spokesperson Rohan Gupta. Other new secretaries are Kavita Patidar, K. Surendran, Phangnon Konyak, Mriganka Deo Barman, and Manoj Tigga.
Strategic Drivers
Party sources describe the reshuffle as a strategic effort to strengthen the organisation's foundation for the 2029 general elections. The move follows an electoral defeat in the Bankipur assembly bypoll, a longtime urban stronghold previously vacated by Nitin Nabin. This loss led to an internal review regarding a decline in urban vote share.
The restructuring comes as the party prepares for state assembly elections in Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. The inclusion of leaders like Manpreet Singh Badal, a former Congress leader and Punjab finance minister, and Sandeep Pathak is seen as a focus on the upcoming Punjab polls. Additionally, the appointment of several young leaders, including 35-year-old Hemang Joshi and 46-year-old Rituraj Kishore Sinha, reflects a move toward younger leadership.
The internal changes occurred amid the monsoon session of Parliament, where Home Minister Amit Shah held high-level discussions while Opposition protests disrupted proceedings. Sources noted that a potential Cabinet reshuffle was postponed due to nationwide NEET-related protests and is now being coordinated with these organisational changes.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the appointees on X, stating:
"Congratulations to the newly appointed National Office Bearers of the BJP and those who have been given various responsibilities in the Party. This newly appointed team brings together organisational experience, energy and grassroots connect. I am confident they will give their best in strengthening our Party and focussing on public service. My best wishes to them."

.
The day's changes were further compounded by the resignation of national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla, who cited personal and financial reasons.
The party now looks toward the 2027 state polls and the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, with observers expecting potential government-to-party transitions as senior ministers move into organisational roles.
