Chelsea have completed the signing of Italian international Marco Palestra from Atalanta for a fee of approximately £47 million, including add-ons. The 21-year-old defender arrives on a seven-year contract, which runs through to 2033, though some reports describe the deal as six years with an option for a further year.
The acquisition represents the first arrival since Xabi Alonso was appointed as manager. The move follows a period of squad instability after Chelsea finished 10th in the Premier League last season and failed to qualify for European competition.
Palestra was not without suitors. According to sources in Italy, he had been the subject of an agreement to rejoin his childhood club, Inter Milan. However, Chelsea intervened to surpass a £43 million offer from the Italian side by providing a more substantial financial package and more attractive wages.
The defender’s rise has been rapid. Within three years, Palestra progressed from Atalanta's under-23 side in Italy's third tier to the senior squad, making his first-team debut in the Europa League in December 2023. His development accelerated during a loan spell at Cagliari last season, where he featured in 37 league games and was named Serie A's defender of the year.
Data from Opta and the Serie A website highlight a highly offensive profile. During his time at Cagliari, Palestra attempted 73 dribbles over distances of more than 5m — the most by any defender in Serie A, surpassed only by Juventus winger Kenan Yildiz. His 70 successful dribbles were the highest of any defender across Europe's top 10 leagues. Additionally, he won 15 fouls in the final third, the joint-most by a defender in Europe's top five leagues last season. He recorded one goal and four assists, and no player in Serie A covered more distance at sprinting speed during his loan spell.

Palestra's versatility allows him to play as a full-back or wing-back on either flank, and he began his career in central midfield. This adaptability may signal that Xabi Alonso intends to implement a back-three system, similar to the one he used to lead Bayer Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title in 2024.
Guido Angelozzi, the former Cagliari sporting director who signed Palestra on loan, described the player as a "curious young man" with a "strong personality" and a maturity that translates to the pitch. Angelozzi noted that Chelsea and other European clubs sought character references during the process.
International recognition has followed his club form. Palestra earned his senior debut for Italy during the World Cup play-off match against Northern Ireland, which resulted in an unsuccessful qualifying campaign. He currently holds two caps for the national team.
The signing comes amid a broader squad overhaul and financial pressure. On Tuesday, UEFA urged Chelsea to "significantly decrease" squad costs after the club broke financial monitoring rules again. To help their financial position, Chelsea have already sold left-back Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid for a reported 60 million euros.
The club is continuing to reshape the roster. Agreed deals are already in place for winger Geovany Quenda from Sporting and striker Emmanuel Emegha from Strasbourg, while midfielder Valentin Barco is also expected to join. Chelsea are currently prioritizing a center-back, with Crystal Palace's Maxence Lacroix as the primary target, and are in discussions for Rayo Vallecano full-back Pep Chavarria.
Not all targets have been secured. Sunderland have rejected an £8 million bid for captain Granit Xhaka, who previously worked under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen.
Several current players face uncertain futures. Midfielder Enzo Fernandez has expressed a desire to leave and is attracting interest from Real Madrid; Chelsea would listen to offers of £120 million for the Argentinian. Other players with uncertain futures include:
- Malo Gusto (Manchester City has shown interest; Chelsea reportedly wants £75 million)
- Trevoh Chalobah (Como has held talks)
- Alejandro Garnacho
- Liam Delap
- Wesley Fofana
- Tosin Adarabioyo
Further additions, including a central midfielder and a versatile forward, will likely depend on whether Chelsea can successfully execute these player sales.
