A shooting at a downtown Lexington park on Saturday, August 16, 2026, left one person dead and four others injured. The incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. At Charles Young Park, where an outdoor concert was being held from 6 p.m. To 8 p.m., according to the Lexington Herald-Leader.
Lexington police officers responded to reports of shots fired just before 7 p.m. And discovered five victims, a department statement said. While one victim was declared dead at a hospital, the remaining four sustained injuries that police believe are non-life-threatening.
Police Chief Lawrence Weathers confirmed that the wounded include two children, aged 4 and 14, and two adults. University of Kentucky HealthCare reportedly notified employees via email that the institution provided care to multiple patients following the shooting.
The violence unfolded in a crowded bar district, sending revelers scrambling for safety. Devine Carama, who leads the youth gun violence reduction program for Lexington Mayor Linda Gorton, posted video of the event. At least 13 gunshots are audible in the footage. In a caption, Carama stated that a person was shot eight inches away while he attempted to keep four young people safe and covered.
Carama described a scene where bystanders rushed to help, with some performing CPR and another individual lifting a young victim who had been shot. He noted that he witnessed EMS responding to multiple victims in real time, adding, This is not normal

Gov. Andy Beshear confirmed the incident while speaking at a Kentucky Democratic Party event titled Moving Forward Together, located at the Hyatt Regency a short distance from the park. Police maintained a large presence in downtown Lexington throughout Saturday night, closing several surrounding roads to facilitate the investigation. Chief Weathers told reporters that he did not believe there was an ongoing threat to the public, though he declined to provide information regarding a suspect. No arrests have been made.

The Kentucky shooting occurred during a period of concentrated violence across the United States. In Virginia, five people were injured in a shooting at Virginia State University near a residence hall around 1:30 a.m. Local time on Saturday. The university reported the incident involved multiple suspects
and one victim was in critical condition. A 19-year-old suspect was arrested Saturday evening.
Further incidents included a shooting in Chicago on Saturday evening that left four people injured, two of them critically, after occupants of a car opened fire through windows. On Friday, a mass shooting in Michigan resulted in several deaths. Police identified the gunman as Chad Hickman, who is believed to have killed a 45-year-old man, a 40-year-old woman, a 16-year-old boy, and a 53-year-old man at a second home. A 29-year-old woman was also found dead in a wooded area alongside Hickman, who died by suicide.
Additionally, a shooting on Wednesday at a high school in Houston County, Georgia, left at least two students injured; a suspect in that case was taken into custody.
