Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra leaks reveal camera and sensor upgrades

Leaked specifications for the upcoming Galaxy S27 series suggest a significant overhaul of the camera systems for Samsung's top-tier models. Reports indicate that the Galaxy S27 Pro and Galaxy S27 Ultra will share several high-end imaging components, though they will maintain distinct differences in zoom capabilities and physical design.

Selfie Camera and Sensor Shifts

Samsung may be preparing to replace the 12MP front-facing camera used since the S23 Ultra with a new 16MP lens for the S27 Pro and Ultra. According to a report from GalaxyClub, Samsung could implement a square sensor for these selfie cameras. This hardware shift would potentially allow the devices to offer functionality similar to the center stage feature found on Apple's iPhone 17.

It remains unclear if the more affordable Galaxy S27 and S27 Plus will receive this 16MP upgrade.

Rear Camera Array and Optical Changes

The S27 Ultra is expected to move toward a streamlined triple-camera layout. This involves abandoning the dedicated 3x telephoto lens and instead relying on in-sensor cropping. The Ultra will likely feature a 5x periscope zoom camera with a 10x in-sensor crop.

The Galaxy S27 Pro is expected to mirror much of the Ultra's hardware. Both flagships are reported to feature a 200MP primary sensor—likely the 1/1.3-inch ISOCELL HP6—and a 50MP ultrawide sensor. However, the Pro model may differ in its telephoto setup. While it is possible the Pro will utilize a 3-4x zoom camera, Samsung may instead opt for a more affordable 5x zoom sensor.

Additional innovation is expected for the Ultra model specifically, with the reintroduction of variable aperture technology. This feature is designed to improve HDR capabilities, depth of field, and performance in low-light conditions.

Hardware and Display Divergence

The two high-end models will differ primarily in size and utility. The Galaxy S27 Ultra will feature a 6.9-inch display and remain the only model in the series to include the S Pen. The Galaxy S27 Pro is reported to have a smaller display, with sources citing sizes of either 6.5 inches or 6.47 inches.

Under the hood, both the Pro and Ultra will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset. While this processor provides top-tier performance for AI applications and gaming, its high production cost may lead to higher retail prices or trade-offs in other areas, such as battery capacity.

A divide in screen technology is also expected across the lineup. While the Pro and Ultra will retain premium in-house Samsung displays, reports indicate that the base Galaxy S27 and S27 Plus may use cheaper BOE OLED panels as a cost-saving measure. Additionally, all four models in the S27 series could be equipped with Samsung's Privacy Display.

Market Context and Competition

These strategic choices appear to be influenced by competition with Apple. The move toward a 16MP front camera and the use of BOE panels in lower-tier models mirror trends and components seen in Apple's device strategies.

Beyond the S27 series, Samsung continues to face intensifying competition in the foldable market. As Apple prepares to enter the space, collaborative efforts on foldable display technology could potentially lead to an Apple foldable iPhone that would challenge Samsung's Z Fold 8.
