Pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto 6 opened on June 25, triggering a surge of activity on secondary markets where scalpers are selling copies at inflated prices. Despite the widespread availability of the game through official channels, some buyers are paying premiums on eBay for a product that possesses no physical scarcity.

The retail price for the Standard Edition is $80, while the Ultimate Edition, which grants access to exclusive stores and items, is $100. However, eBay listings show a different reality. Some successful sales for basic copies have reached $99 or more. Other reports indicate desperate buyers have spent up to $168 for a standard pre-order, paying an additional $31 for delivery. Some confirmed sales for the Standard Physical Edition have reached $120 plus shipping.

The most aggressive listings see scalpers demanding $199 for the standard edition, with an additional $24 for postage, totaling $225. These high-priced listings have appeared for both PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions.

This market volatility persists despite a critical detail: the physical edition of GTA 6 does not contain a traditional disc. Rockstar announced it is ditching discs for the launch, meaning the retail box strictly contains a redeemable digital download code. A new report further claims Rockstar has no plans to ever release a disc for the title.

Because digital codes can be generated in infinite quantities, there is no actual inventory to exhaust. Major retailers, including Amazon, Best Buy, and Target, have indicated that code-in-box copies remain available for pre-order. But a "weird consumer panic" has taken hold, fueled by the psychological pressure of the Fear Of Missing Out (FOMO) and the desire for social validation on launch day.

The panic was exacerbated by temporary technical glitches on June 25. According to one report, massive user traffic caused sites like GameStop and Amazon to freeze or momentarily display sold out indicators. Opportunistic sellers weaponized these glitches, using high-pressure language to manipulate impulsive buyers into believing that securing a copy through regular channels was impossible.

Beyond the box, the game's structure is also seeing new details. Store listings from Amazon Brazil and another retailer have revealed gameplay features, including the fact that the story appears to be divided into distinct chapters, similar to Red Dead Redemption 2.

For those avoiding the secondary market, Rockstar is offering incentives for pre-ordering. Purchases made before November 20 will include a one month subscription to GTA+ and the Vintage Vice City Pack. The GTA+ membership must be redeemed within 180 days of the pre-order purchase.

GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. While there is no official confirmation or timeline for a PC port, rumors suggest a version for the Nintendo Switch 2 could arrive in 2027.
