Explosions are heard near a US base in northern Iraq as US-Iran fighting escalates

Explosions rocked the city of Irbil in northern Iraq on Friday, 24 July 2026, as drones carrying explosives targeted an area hosting U.S. Forces. The attacks occurred hours after the American military announced the completion of its 13th consecutive night of strikes against Iran.

Security officials in northern Iraq stated that U.S.-led forces intercepted and shot down five explosive-laden drones over Irbil. While an Associated Press journalist reported hearing at least seven blasts and seeing four plumes of black smoke rising from the vicinity of a base at the city's airport, officials noted the incident caused no casualties or damage.

The escalation coincides with wider regional instability. Bahrain, home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th fleet, sounded sirens twice on Friday. Additionally, Kuwaiti authorities confirmed that air defense systems intercepted incoming Iranian drones overnight, while other missile and drone attacks targeted Jordan.

The conflict has intensified over the past week. U.S. Central Command stated its latest barrage of strikes was intended to further degrade Iran’s ability to threaten civilian mariners and commercial vessels transiting regional waters. These operations aim to regain control of the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway through which a fifth of the world’s oil and gas transited in peacetime.

Strikes and Casualties

U.S. Bombardment overnight reportedly hit several Iranian locations, including:

• A Revolutionary Guard naval base in northern Iran.
• Qeshm Island, used for naval assets and drone boats.
• Isfahan province, which houses a major air base and a nuclear site.
• Khuzestan province in the southwest and Fars province in the south.

Iranian media also reported multiple explosions in Bushehr and other southern areas, with air defenses activated over Tehran. The human and financial costs are mounting. The Pentagon has identified another American service member killed in recent Iranian attacks, bringing the total U.S. Military death toll to 18. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated the military campaign has cost $37.5 billion since February.

In Iran, the Health Ministry reported that 55 people have been killed and over 600 wounded in strikes over recent weeks.

Maritime Conflict and Economic Pressure

The fighting is centered on the Strait of Hormuz and the Red Sea. Iranian-allied Houthi rebels targeted two Saudi tankers in the Red Sea on Thursday, acting on threats to close the Bab el-Mandeb Strait to Saudi-linked shipping. This passage handles about 12% of global trade and a fourth of global container traffic.

The attacks forced Saudi Arabia to divert millions of barrels of oil daily to its Red Sea port of Yanbu to bypass the Strait of Hormuz. Following the attacks, Brent crude topped $100 a barrel before declining.

Political and Diplomatic Tensions

President Donald Trump has threatened major military punishment against the Houthis. He also warned Iran via social media that sanctioned Iranian funds held by the U.S. Would be used to pay for damages to ships and cargo.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi condemned the proposal on X, stating that if governments normalize confiscation, no one’s assets are safe.

Tensions are further heightened by U.S. Threats to strike the Pickaxe Mountain nuclear facility pretty soon, and very heavily. Tehran warned that any attack on nuclear sites would dramatically expand the conflict.

Despite the volatility, diplomatic efforts continue. Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni recently met with Pakistan's military leadership, including Field Marshal Asim Munir, in Islamabad to discuss preventing a broader regional war.
