The family of New Zealand actor Sam Neill announced that he died suddenly on Monday, July 13, in Sydney, Australia. He was 78 years old.

The announcement, shared via Neill's Instagram page, stated that the actor was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. While the family described the loss as sudden and unexpected, they noted it was blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.

The family expressed their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for the care provided. Further details will be shared later, but the family has requested privacy as they navigate what they termed an immeasurable loss.

The death comes months after Neill received positive health news. In April, the actor announced he was cancer-free following a scan that showed no cancer in his body, a result he described as an extraordinary thing. At the time, Neill told 7News that he was very, very excited and remarked, it's time I did another movie.

Neill's battle with illness was detailed in his 2023 memoir, Did I Ever Tell You This? In the book, he revealed he was being treated for stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma. He later described the condition on Australian television as a ferocious type of aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Neill had lived with the lymphoma for about five years and had relied on chemotherapy, which he called a pretty miserable business that was keeping me alive until the treatment stopped working.

He eventually underwent trial treatment and CAR-T cell therapy, which led to the recent absence of disease. Speaking to ABC's Australian Story in 2023, Neill said he was not remotely afraid of death, though he admitted it would be annoying because he still had more to do.

Over a career spanning five decades, Neill became a global figure, most notably for his portrayal of Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise. His extensive film and television credits also include The Piano, Peaky Blinders, The Dish, Event Horizon, The Portable Door, The Hunt for October Red, Peter Rabbit, and Thor: Love and Thunder.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid tribute to the actor, stating that Neill earned a special place in Australian hearts through his roles in so many beloved Australian stories. Albanese described Neill as wry and dry, thoughtful and laconic, adding that he fought his illness with the same dignity, humour and conviction seen in his performances.

Members of the acting community also shared their grief online. Australian actor Magda Szubanski, who is in remission for stage-three blood cancer, said she was absolutely devastated and in complete shock by the news.

British actor Richard E Grant described Neill as an officer and a gentleman in the truest sense, noting that Neill had guided and helped him through a very difficult period in his life. Alan Cumming, an actor and host of The Traitors US, called Neill a glorious beautiful man. Actor and comedian Rhys Darby described him as a legend and an inspiration to all even beyond the art world.
