FIA and Member Clubs Drive Innovation at Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress
Barcelona, Spain — The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), alongside representatives from 13 of its Member Clubs, actively participated in the recent Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress (TMWC) in Barcelona. Engaging with a diverse group of innovators, urban planners, and industry leaders, the FIA delegation reinforced its commitment to advancing safer, more affordable, and sustainable urban transportation solutions globally.
The TMWC, an event co-organized by Fira de Barcelona and EIT Urban Mobility, served as a crucial platform for discussing key themes in urban development, including green and active transport, digitalization, shared mobility, accessibility, logistics, and safety. Over 25,000 attendees from 130 countries converged, marking the event’s fourth edition as a significant forum for collaboration and innovation in urban mobility, as reported by EIT Urban Mobility.
Interactive Workshops Showcase Cutting-Edge Mobility Technologies
A highlight for FIA Member Clubs was the Urban Mobility Incubation Workshop, specifically designed to foster connections with leading mobility innovators. This immersive session featured interactive demonstrations and discussions on advancements such as predictive AI for motorcyclist safety, sophisticated intersection risk modeling, and enhanced cycle safety assessment tools. Further insights were provided into connected vehicle safety developments, novel drone applications for mobility management, and AI-based traffic optimization systems. Participants also learned about the FIA’s ongoing collaboration with Roadscor on intersection safety and the FIA Driver Safety Index, a newly established benchmark for assessing driver risk. These presentations offered invaluable practical applications for emerging tools, identifying tangible opportunities for clubs to implement safer and more efficient mobility services within their local communities.
Measuring the Safety Footprint: A Central Theme
A pivotal open session, “Can organisations measure their safety footprint?”, underscored the importance of structured safety assessment frameworks. Panelists, including Yuri Fernandez of Uber, Raphael Humberto Rios Wilches from Compensar, Valentino Sevino, Director General of AMAT – City of Milan, María Torremocha of Grupo Santalucía, and Cordelia Wilson, Euro NCAP’s Events & Communications Director, emphasized how robust safety frameworks can drive operational excellence, strengthen accountability, and build user trust. The FIA Road Safety Index, a groundbreaking framework that guides organizations in measuring, managing, and improving their road safety performance, was prominently featured. During the session, Santalucía Seguros proudly announced its achievement of the FIA Road Safety Index’s top 3-star rating, a testament to its leadership in road safety management. This accomplishment was supported by the FIA Member Club Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE) and Fundación RACE. Developed with the backing of the FIA Foundation, the Index is increasingly becoming a vital tool for reducing risks and saving lives globally, as detailed in the FIA Activity Report 2024.
Motor Sport’s Data-Driven Culture Inspires Urban Safety
Luca Pascotto, FIA Head of Road Safety & Global Advocacy, delivered a keynote address highlighting how the continuous improvement, awareness, and innovation inherent in motor sport’s data-driven culture can serve as an inspiration for creating safer urban environments. His address drew parallels between the precision and safety protocols of motorsport and their potential application in designing and managing urban streets.
FIA Member Clubs: Local Action, Global Impact
FIA Mobility Clubs were actively engaged throughout the Congress. The Automòbil Club d’Andorra presented its pioneering work in drone training, while RACC hosted a significant side event focusing on the future of mobility in Spain. These contributions highlighted the extensive expertise within the FIA network and the indispensable role Member Clubs play in advocating for consumer rights and collaborating with local authorities to drive meaningful change in urban mobility systems. Further demonstrating the FIA’s dedication to urban development, the FIA Foundation highlighted at the G20 summit the critical need for increased investment in safe, sustainable, and active mobility, emphasizing how cities like Rio have successfully partnered with organizations like the World Bank to finance these initiatives, according to FIA Foundation.
Industrial Innovation and Future Prospects
The program for Member Clubs also included exclusive on-site visits to the SILENCE and EBRO factories, providing delegates with a unique opportunity to directly observe industrial innovations shaping the future of mobility. The upcoming Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress 2025, scheduled for November 4-6 in Barcelona, looks to build on these discussions, further solidifying its position as the premier event for global urban mobility stakeholders.
