World Cup 2026 Round of 32 picture takes shape as group stage ends
The group stage of the 2026 World Cup is nearing its conclusion, with the Round of 32 bracket beginning to solidify. Under the expanded 48-team format, 32 teams will advance to the knockout rounds: the top two finishers from each of the 12 groups, along with the eight best third-place teams across the tournament.
The knockout stage is scheduled to begin on Sunday, June 28, 2026, and will run through July 4. The first match of the Round of 32 will be Canada against South Africa in Los Angeles.
Group Outcomes and Qualified Teams
Several groups have already determined their leaders and qualifiers. Mexico finished atop Group A with a perfect nine points after scoring three second-half goals against Czechia. South Africa secured second place with four points, while South Korea finished third and will advance as one of the eight best third-place teams. Czechia was eliminated.
In Group B, Switzerland claimed first place following a 2-0 victory over Canada. Canada advances as the runner-up. Bosnia and Herzegovina also moved on after finishing third with four points, secured by a 3-1 win over Qatar. Qatar has been eliminated.
Brazil won Group C after defeating Scotland. Morocco advances as the runner-up based on goal differential, finishing at +3 compared to Brazil's +6. Scotland finished third with three points and remains alive pending the final third-place rankings.
The United States finished first in Group D. Despite resting key starters in their final group match and losing 3-2 to Türkiye, the Americans secured the top seed. Australia claimed the second automatic berth after a scoreless draw with Paraguay. Paraguay finished third with four points and has qualified as a third-place team.
Germany clinched first place in Group E, though they suffered a 2-1 loss to Ecuador in their final match. Ivory Coast took second place after a 2-0 win over Curaçao. Ecuador advances as a third-place qualifier, while Curaçao was eliminated with one point.
The Netherlands won Group F with a 3-1 win over Tunisia. Japan secured second place via a 1-1 draw with Sweden. Sweden finishes third and will qualify as one of the best third-place teams. Tunisia was eliminated.
In Group I, France secured first place with a victory over Norway, though Norway also advanced as the runner-up. Senegal remains in the hunt for a third-place berth after beating Iraq, while Iraq was eliminated.
Argentina has already secured first place in Group J. They will play the Group J runner-up on July 3 in Miami. In Group K, Colombia has reached the Round of 32 and currently sits atop the group after beating DR Congo. Portugal is also well positioned to advance, needing only a draw against Colombia to clinch a spot.
Remaining Battles and Eliminations
Several groups remain undecided heading into the final matchday on Saturday, June 27.
- Group G: Egypt can clinch the group with a win over Iran. Belgium needs a victory over New Zealand and an Egypt win to guarantee advancement. Iran also requires a win and help from Belgium, while New Zealand must defeat Belgium to stay alive.
- Group H: Spain can clinch first place with a win over Uruguay; a draw is likely sufficient. Cape Verde and Uruguay are battling for the second automatic spot. Saudi Arabia requires a win over Cape Verde and outside help.
- Group J: Algeria and Austria will face off for second place. A draw could leave both teams dependent on third-place rankings.
- Group K: DR Congo and Uzbekistan need a win in their head-to-head meeting and help elsewhere to avoid relying on a third-place spot.
- Group L: England currently leads on goal differential but can only secure the group with a win over Panama. Ghana and Croatia face each other with a spot in the Round of 32 and potentially first place on the line. Panama has been eliminated.
Teams that have been mathematically eliminated include Haiti, Tunisia, Türkiye, Jordan, and Panama.
Upcoming Knockout Matchups
Specific pairings are already established for some teams. The United States will face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Wednesday in Santa Clara, California. Australia is set to play the runner-up from Group G in Dallas. Brazil will travel to Houston to face the Group F runner-up on Monday, while Morocco will take on the Group F winner in Guadalajara.
The tournament uses head-to-head results as the primary tiebreaker for group seeding. If teams remain level, goal differential and goals scored are used, followed by the most recent FIFA Men's World Ranking.
