Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced sells over 3 million copies, New Game+ is coming
Ubisoft's Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced reached 3 million copies sold in its first week. The studio has confirmed a New Game+ mode is in development.
Ubisoft has confirmed that Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced reached a milestone of 3 million copies sold in its first week of availability. Released on July 9, 2026, the remake saw immediate interest, moving 2 million copies within its first 24 hours. The title, developed under the newly formed Vantage Studios banner and led by Ubisoft Singapore, is now available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC via the Ubisoft Store, the Epic Games Store, and Steam, where it carries Steam Deck Verified status.
The game serves as a ground-up reconstruction of the 2013 original, utilizing the latest Anvil engine to update visuals and mechanics. Players assume the role of pirate captain Edward Kenway, navigating the Golden Age of Piracy alongside historical figures including Blackbeard, Anne Bonny, and Calico Jack. While the core experience remains focused on the struggle between Assassins and Templars, the remake introduces adjusted parry-driven combat, parkour improvements, and enhanced naval gameplay.
Following the sales announcement, Ubisoft confirmed that a New Game+ mode is currently in development. While no specific release date has been provided, the team intends to use the feature to increase replayability. Richard Knight, the game director, indicated that the studio is leveraging development work from Assassin’s Creed Shadows to implement the mode. Despite the current focus on these updates, the studio considers the game to be content complete, meaning players should not expect major narrative expansions.
The launch has been marked by a blend of commercial success and industry controversy. On the financial side, the title shattered the franchise’s previous all-time concurrent player record on Steam, surpassing 99,451 players. Positive player sentiment has also been reflected in Steam user reviews, which climbed to a "Very Positive" rating following a series of quality-of-life patches and bug fixes. However, the release faced criticism regarding the inclusion of day-one microtransactions totaling approximately $85 in additional content. Despite the backlash, reports suggest these purchases contributed an additional $1 million in revenue on the Steam platform.
Operational challenges have also shadowed the project’s success. Shortly after the July 9 release, it was reported that Ubisoft disbanded its Barcelona studio—one of the teams involved in the development of Black Flag Resynced—resulting in the loss of 51 positions. These workforce reductions were reportedly planned prior to the launch.
Additionally, an intended community event scheduled for July 17 experienced issues when a player discovered the grand prize, an Explorer Outfit for Edward Kenway, ahead of the official start time. This incident resulted in the early unlock of the item before the event could proceed as planned.
The company has positioned Black Flag Resynced as a key test for the Vantage Studios structure, which was established in 2025 to manage the long-term growth of the Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six franchises.
