The ROG Xbox Ally X20 represents a significant visual and physical shift from its predecessors. For the first time in the series, Asus has transitioned to a 7.4-inch Nebula HDR OLED display. This panel boasts 1,400 nits of peak brightness and a 120Hz refresh rate, aiming to solve the immersion concerns often associated with smaller handheld screens. To protect the more heat-sensitive OLED hardware, Asus engineers redesigned the internal airflow channels to direct more fresh air toward the APU and keep the display’s surface temperatures managed. The handheld remains powered by the AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor, paired with 24GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 1TB of PCIe 4.0 NVMe storage. Despite the internal similarities to the previous ROG Xbox Ally X, the X20 chassis has grown slightly—measuring 9mm wider and half a millimeter thicker—while gaining 41 grams in weight. According to The Verge, these adjustments were necessary to accommodate the updated screen and cooling components.

Control Upgrades and the End of the Library Button

Asus has overhauled the input experience based on user feedback. The much-maligned “Library” button has been removed, replaced by an “Action” button that functions similarly to modern console controllers; a single press triggers a screenshot, while a long press captures a video recording. The D-pad has also been replaced with a “Transforming D-Pad” capable of switching between four-way and eight-way movement, a feature targeted at fighting game enthusiasts. Further refinement is evident in the joysticks and buttons. The X20 utilizes TMR joystick technology, which Asus claims provides greater precision and longer-lasting performance than Hall effect sensors by eliminating drift. The face buttons now sit flush against the chassis to facilitate smoother thumb sliding, and the rear handgrips feature a new rubberized coating. These tactile changes accompany a redesigned fan system that, according to company spokesperson Anthony Spence, ensures better feedback and quieter operation for the bumper switches.

The Xreal R1 Bundle and Pricing Strategy

The most controversial aspect of the launch is the company’s decision to lock the device behind an exclusive bundle. The ROG Xbox Ally X20 will not be sold as a standalone unit. Instead, it comes paired with the ROG Xreal R1 Edition 20 AR glasses. These glasses, which were announced on May 15, provide a virtual 171-inch screen at a 4-meter distance and feature a 240Hz refresh rate with 0.01ms response time. While official pricing has yet to be finalized, the market entry points for the individual components suggest a high cost of entry. The standard ROG Xbox Ally X retails for $1,000, and the Xreal R1 glasses are priced at $849. Analysts at Engadget noted that given the “collector” branding, the total bundle price could easily approach or exceed $2,000.

The handheld is part of a wider “Edition 20” lineup introduced at Computex 2026 to celebrate the brand’s two-decade history. This special-edition aesthetic—defined by gold-colored accents and anniversary badging—has been applied to a range of hardware, including the ROG Ryujin 360 liquid cooler and the ROG Azoth Extreme keyboard. Wccftech reported that some of these peripherals, such as the ROG Destrier chair and specialized luggage, will see only limited releases. Meanwhile, documentation from the Korean National Radio Research Agency has surfaced regarding a separate model, the RC74XA. While speculation initially suggested this could be an “Ally 2,” TechPowerUp suggests this model number indicates a potential refresh or a different configuration within the existing ROG Xbox Ally series. As the market moves toward late 2026, consumers remain waiting for official launch dates and regional availability for the X20 bundle, which remains the most premium—and potentially most exclusive—option in Asus’s current handheld portfolio.
