Diageo, the global drinks giant behind Guinness, is set to invest an additional €257.5 million to double the capacity of its state-of-the-art carbon-neutral brewery in Littleconnell, County Kildare. The move brings the company’s total investment in the site to an estimated €457.5 million, marking one of the largest single brewery expansions in Europe in recent years. The new plans, which include a 9,333m² “Brewery 2” building and a total gross internal floor area of 14,976m², are part of a broader strategy to meet surging global demand for Guinness and its non-alcoholic variant, Guinness 0.0, particularly in emerging markets.

Capacity and Construction Details

The expansion will more than double the brewery’s annual output to 4.5 million hectolitres, positioning Littleconnell as a central hub for Diageo’s lager and ale brands, including Rockshore, Harp, Hop House 13, Smithwick’s, Kilkenny, and Carlsberg. The site will also become a key production center for Guinness and Guinness 0.0, with the latter currently brewed exclusively at St James’s Gate in Dublin. The project is expected to generate between 800 and 1,000 construction jobs during the build phase, according to Diageo’s official statements.

The Littleconnell facility is designed to set new benchmarks for energy and water efficiency in the brewing industry. The expansion includes ground-mounted solar panels covering 15,000m², underscoring Diageo’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing. Diageo is preparing to lodge a statutory planning application for a 10-year permission, following previous delays due to a legal challenge from a local resident. The challenge was withdrawn after mediation, and the company is now seeking a smoother passage through the planning process. The new application includes provisions for 38 HGV truck parking spaces, reflecting the scale of logistics required for a facility of this size.
