A tragic accident at the University of Karachi (KU) on Friday claimed the life of Aniqa Saeed, a second-year student from the Department of Social Work. She was fatally struck by a campus bus while alighting from the vehicle inside the university premises.
Details of the Incident
According to police reports, the incident occurred as Aniqa was getting off the university bus. She was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, but doctors declared her dead upon arrival. The university administration confirmed her identity and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a promising young student.
The driver of the bus has been taken into custody, and the university’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi, has suspended him pending a formal investigation. The family of the deceased, however, declined to pursue legal action.
University and Government Response
The KU administration responded swiftly by forming a four-member inquiry committee to investigate the circumstances leading to the accident. The committee is chaired by Professor Dr. Naima Saeed, head of the Department of Criminology, and includes the transport in-charge from NED University and two students from Aniqa’s department. Their task is to compile a detailed report for the Vice Chancellor.
Following receipt of the inquiry report, KU plans to implement preventive measures aimed at improving campus transport safety and preventing similar tragedies.
Sindh Minister for Universities and Boards Ismail Rahoo described the incident as tragic and urgently requested a detailed report from the university. He pledged that those found responsible would face strict disciplinary actions.
Similarly, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori took notice of the accident, ordering a comprehensive investigation by the university and local police. He expressed heartfelt condolences to the family and emphasized the importance of transparency in the investigation process.
Campus Reaction and Broader Concerns
The tragic death has sparked grief and outrage across the KU campus. Students organized protests demanding stricter safety regulations, improved transport services, and accountability from university authorities.
This incident underscores persistent concerns over student safety and transportation management within educational institutions in Pakistan. Experts on campus safety advocate comprehensive reforms, including better driver training, rigorous vehicle maintenance, and clear emergency protocols to safeguard students.
Contextualizing Campus Transport Safety
Road accidents within university campuses are not uncommon in Pakistan’s large urban centers, where bustling student populations and vehicular traffic intersect. According to the World Health Organization, road traffic injuries remain a leading cause of death globally among young adults, making targeted safety measures critical here as well.
Such tragedies highlight the urgent need for universities to invest in safer infrastructure and stricter regulations related to campus transportation to protect students’ lives and well-being.
