APEC’s New AI Initiative Sparks Regional Collaboration

With the conclusion of the 2025 APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, the Asia-Pacific region has taken a significant step toward coordinated artificial intelligence development. The newly unveiled APEC AI Initiative marks the forum’s first formal statement on AI and the first such declaration jointly endorsed by both the United States and China. The initiative calls for inclusive cooperation among member economies, with Korea proposing the establishment of an Asia-Pacific AI Center to further regional integration and technological advancement.

Universities and Industry: Bridging the Gap

As the region accelerates its AI ambitions, universities are being called upon to play a pivotal role in education and research. Eduardo Pedrosa, executive director of the APEC Secretariat, emphasized the importance of partnerships between multinational companies and domestic universities during his participation in the QS Higher Ed Summit: Asia Pacific 2025. “There are multinational companies, and while they work within their jurisdiction, there is also the option of international partnerships, and the multinational companies can help bridge gaps that universities face,” Pedrosa said. He stressed the need for platforms that foster dialogue between industry and academia, noting that such collaborations can accelerate technological growth and address skill shortages.

Challenges and Opportunities in AI Integration

While many Korean universities are expanding their AI departments and increasing student recruitment, Pedrosa highlighted the challenge of balancing specialized AI education with broader academic fields. “AI can be vertical, and we do need specialists. But AI also cuts across every discipline and can help enhance how we teach in any field,” he explained. He suggested that universities could maintain specialized AI departments while integrating AI into other disciplines, ensuring that students across all fields benefit from technological advancements.

APEC’s Role in Educational Collaboration

APEC has long promoted collaboration in education and research among its member economies. The APEC Study Centers, located around the world, foster academic discussions and research that support regional economic integration. Pedrosa noted that while these centers have been strong in political science and economics, there is a need to expand outreach to engineering and technology faculties, particularly in the context of AI. “We do need to ask ourselves if we have been reaching out enough to the engineering faculty,” he said, underscoring the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration.

Korea’s Leadership in AI Development

Korea’s role in the APEC AI Initiative is seen as crucial, given its advanced manufacturing sector and technological expertise. Pedrosa highlighted the interest in sharing best practices and understanding how different manufacturers in the Asia-Pacific region can learn from one another. “Seeing how AI gets integrated into the manufacturing process is going to be something very interesting to see,” he said. He also noted that while there are concerns about intellectual property sharing, recent meetings have demonstrated a willingness among companies to share practices and collaborate on AI integration.

Looking Ahead: The Path to Inclusive Growth

The APEC AI Initiative represents a significant step toward inclusive growth and technological advancement in the Asia-Pacific region. By fostering collaboration between universities, industry, and governments, APEC aims to ensure that the benefits of AI are widely shared. As Pedrosa concluded, “APEC’s vision is to champion broad-based growth and inclusion beyond traditional trade initiatives.” The success of this initiative will depend on the ability of member economies to work together, share knowledge, and address the challenges of AI integration in education and industry.
